A personal computer is one of the most prominent symbols of modern society as it is considered to be the powerhouse of information .Information occupies a large chunk of our daily life as we take an account of the daily nitty - gritties of our life.

A personal computer comprises of hardware and software. The hardware is the tangible part of a computer which can be felt with our hands and can be repaired by opening up its basic contraption. The hardware of a personal computer consists of the screen, the RAM the CPU and its motherboard. The software of a personal computer is that part of the computer which is embedded into the systems of the computer and remains intangible.

Maintenance of such software is done by installing anti corruption software which guards against external as well as internal corruption of software in the computer. Corruption of software can take place when the computer is infested by virus, a program that is directed at deletion or by rendering it incapable to be accessed or read by the computer. Such infest of the virus can take place through the internet. Some scrupulous individuals develop programs such as these and fix them in internet sites which when accessed by the computer gets into the software of the personal computer and ruin its systems and data. The system may as a result crash and bring down the information system to a grinding halt.

The instructions embedded into the systems memory or the RAM is also known as programs. These programs take care of the various aspects of the computer. The most common form of program in the computer is called the operating system which is essential to start the computer and perform the basic functions of the computer. The basic function of a computer is that of input and processing of data and storage of data as well as retrieval of data. The most common kind of operating system is that of Microsoft Windows, and probably you heard of Linux Ubuntu too. The basic details required to operate a computer are fed into this operating system.

Programs other than the operating system that assist the computer to apply the instructions issued by the RAM to the computer are called applications. Software is thus a culmination of applications and operating systems or sometimes a mixture of both. Particular hardware and software components are run by specialized commands that are issued by certain chunks of software that are attached to the operating systems. These little chunks are called drivers. Upon adding a new piece of hardware or software to a computer or when upgrading the components of the computer it is essential that the consecutive drivers are also upgraded to ensure maximum efficiency.

The hardware also comprises of the circuit board which makes connections between components in a circuitous way and is printed on a board made of fiber glass. Integrated versions of the circuits are in the form of a thin wafer like strip called the chip .The largest board with circuits is known as the mother board.
